Surf school lessons at The Big Kahuna

Maui’s first surf school lessons at The Big Kahuna

Our Surf Lessons take place on the beaches and waters off Kalama Park, also known as ‘The Cove’ in Kihei, Maui. This location is considered the best place to learn how to surf in Maui, and even in the world. The semi-shallow water depth and slow waves make it perfect for beginners, with a year-round water temperature of 79° making it even better. We are fully permitted by the Maui County Parks Dept.

Our lessons run for 2 hours and provide everything you need for a successful surf. Additionally, we have a professional photographer to capture your newfound surfing skills, with photo packages available at a reasonable price. We take pride in our teaching methods and ensure that everyone learns the proper technique of popping up directly to their feet, rather than using the knee slide pop-up. Our instructors are passionate about teaching and want you to succeed, regardless of your age or athletic ability – we guarantee that you will surf in one lesson!

Classes are scheduled at 8 am and 10 am every day except Sunday, and reservations must be made in advance as spots fill up quickly. We recommend scheduling your lesson early in your island stay, allowing you to practice your skills on the warm Maui waves. Private and semi-private lessons are available, and our professional instructors are CPR and First Aid certified.

Although we do not have a minimum age requirement, we highly recommend that parents take lessons with children aged 8 and under, as each child is different. Families can have a fantastic time surfing together and create memories that will last a lifetime. As a proud partner of Make-A-Wish Hawaii, we also teach surfing to some fantastic little kids and bring joy to their lives.

We aim to please and hope to see you soon at Big Kahuna! Much Aloha from our staff.
