Maui’s first surf school lessons at The Big Kahuna
Our Surf Lessons take place on the beaches and waters off Kalama Park, also known as ‘The Cove’ in Kihei, Maui. This location is considered the best place to learn how to surf in Maui, and even in the world. The semi-shallow water depth and slow waves make it perfect for beginners, with a year-round water temperature of 79° making it even better. We are fully permitted by the Maui County Parks Dept.
Our lessons run for 2 hours and provide everything you need for a successful surf. Additionally, we have a professional photographer to capture your newfound surfing skills, with photo packages available at a reasonable price. We take pride in our teaching methods and ensure that everyone learns the proper technique of popping up directly to their feet, rather than using the knee slide pop-up. Our instructors are passionate about teaching and want you to succeed, regardless of your age or athletic ability – we guarantee that you will surf in one lesson!
Classes are scheduled at 8 am and 10 am every day except Sunday, and reservations must be made in advance as spots fill up quickly. We recommend scheduling your lesson early in your island stay, allowing you to practice your skills on the warm Maui waves. Private and semi-private lessons are available, and our professional instructors are CPR and First Aid certified.
Although we do not have a minimum age requirement, we highly recommend that parents take lessons with children aged 8 and under, as each child is different. Families can have a fantastic time surfing together and create memories that will last a lifetime. We have a professional photographer available to capture proof of your new surfing skills, and photo packages are sold separately at a very reasonable price. We take pride in teaching the proper technique of popping up directly to your feet and do not teach the knee slide pop-up. Our instructors genuinely want you to learn to surf, and we guarantee that you will be surfing in one lesson, regardless of your age or athletic ability.

Strong trade winds in the afternoons limit our schedule during that time, so the best time to surf in Hawaii is early morning with clean sets and beautiful skies. We offer surfing lessons on one of Maui’s finest and most exclusive beaches. Our 2-hour sessions provide all the necessary equipment such as a surfboard, rash guard, and booties. We also provide reef-safe sunscreen to protect both you and the coral reef. During our lessons, we focus on teaching the basics of surfing. We start each session with a land lesson to get you comfortable with the surfboard and then move on to practicing the skills required to surf in the water.
In our surfing lessons, you will learn:
- The different parts of the surfboard and equipment selection such as fins, wax, and board.
- Positioning on the surfboard and in the ocean to achieve proper alignment and balance.
