What to eat for your first Hawaiian Breakfast?
Delicious Loco Moco
A local favorite that can be eaten all day but if you are really hungry this is the best thing to eat for breakfast. Loco Moco is a hearty breakfast plate with scoops of rice a nice beef patty doused in delicious gravy and a fried egg on top which is satisfying and filling at the same time. Loco Moco is a more local type food without the bread and where rice is always on the plate breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Malasadas
The Portuguese malasada is a hit at breakfast and bakeries serve them hot and ready to eat at all the popular bakeries on the islands for you to enjoy with your cup of java and a quick sugar rush. Or if you want something fruit or cream filled, try the malasadas with some of the delicious tropical fruit flavors like pineapple, haupia, lilikoi, mango or creamy custard or chocolate filling for a sweet breakfast dessert.
Spam and Eggs
You can’t go to Hawaii and not have Spam for a meal especially for breakfast when many menus’ offer Spam, eggs and rice on the menu for a typical plate breakfast to lunch special meal. It’s salty, savory and filled with umami deliciousness in every bite
Portuguese sausage
Instead of bacon, Portuguese sausage is the meat of choice for a breakfast meat and typically served again with scoops of rice and fried eggs on top for a delicious plate meal you’ll find all around the islands
Acai bowls
Breakfast in Hawaii with Acai bowls, doesn’t that sound like a great start of day?
A popular and healthy trend in Hawaii are Acai bowls which use acai berries as the main ingredient in a bowl full of yogurt, tropical fruits and customized toppings like granola, chocolate bits, coconut flakes and other dried fruits for a healthier alternative for your breakfast meal.
Macadamia nut pancakes
For those sweet tooth breakfast addicts pancakes made with macadamia nuts and served with delicious tropical sauces like sweet lilikoi, coconut haupia or guava syrup make this a not so healthy breakfast alternative and sure to give anyone a sugar rush even with some tropical fruit added to the plate.
Banana bread
Easy to go take out with a fresh cuppa Hawaiian coffee, banana bread is an easy pick-up breakfast to go for those that can eat anytime and on the go for early to late morning breakfast or snack food. Everyone loves banana bread on the island and you can buy them at the local farmers markets, mom and pop take out shops, gas station convenience stores and pop – up street vendors or food trucks anywhere on the islands.
Congee
An Asian inspired breakfast you can find in many Asian or local mom and pop shops for a soupy rice breakfast with a variety of ingredients used but typically chicken, seafood, rice, Chinese doughnut and Asian sauces that make this savory or even spicy hot, depending on your heat preference to a dish. Breakfast versions can have the traditional sausage, bacon, cheese, egg served with your Congee for more westernized flavorings to this dish.
Hawaiian Sweet breads
Popular Portuguese, Hawaiian and Filipino breads can be found at many popular bakeries on the islands or even farmers markets. What do these all have in common – they are sweet and incorporate a variety of tropical ingredients into the mix with pineapple, lilikoi, guava, mango and other tropical fruit flavors into the bread mix to create a variety of sweet breads that are good to eat fresh on their own or filled with a variety of meats, cheeses or other creative inspirations for breakfast.
Tropical Fruit
With so many different kinds of Tropical fruit available to eat on the island, you’ll have so many delicious bites to eat for breakfast on the islands. You can get fresh in season fruits from road side stands, farmers markets and grocery stores to get the freshest fruits to eat for breakfast. Always wait til then are really fresh and in season so you’ll have the ripest fruit to eat here.

Had the Moco Loco and Malasada when I was in Hawaii in 2019! Loved it and now I really have to go back so I can try all of them! We found the best Malasada on the Big Island in Hilo. Wish I could remember the name of the place!
